Hodgkins Disease & Symptoms
Hodgkins disease is a type of lymphoma, a form of Cancer which affects the
lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system consists of a network of glands all over the body. These
glands produce a clear fluid called lymph, which circulates throughout the body
& contains white blood cells known as lymphocytes. Lymphocytes primarily
fight infection as part of the normal defence system of the body.
Hodgkins disease affects both Men & Women usually between the ages of 15
& 40 years.
Symptoms
Usually the first symptom is a painless enlargement of one or more of the
lymph glands, often in the neck, armpit or groin. Many patients feel quite fit
in spite of the swelling, whilst others may become rather listless & 'off
colour'. Some patients may also experience more specific symptoms which include
profuse sweating (most common at night), unexplained fevers, & a rather
sudden drop in weight. Occasionally the skin may become intensely itchy even
though no obvious rash is seen.
