Wendy is being treated by Dr Joe Smarda who details below in his own words the basis of the treatment he is using.

"Dr. Joe Smarda of the SBL Clinic in the Czech Republic and Apollonia house, Uppermill, England, is one of the most influential figures affecting the future direction of medicine today.

Dr Smarda helped to develop a range of animal feeds which replaced the missing ingredients and now has a Joint Venture with a Swiss company, manufacturing some of the most unique animal feeds in the world today - the primary part of his business.

Having achieved such great success with their animals, the farmers, who were the ones who were now the most ill, mostly suffering from the list of chronic diseases outlined above, asked Dr Smarda if he could develop supplements for them. Within a short space of time Dr Smarda found he was treating humans too. He's not a medical doctor but a biochemist, although his new clinic in Stary Jicin in the Czech Republic does have a full medical staff for the treatment of patients, including one of Europe's top immunologists, Dr. Jan Lichnovsky.

Applied immunology is a relatively new science, and Dr Smarda is proclaimed as the father of that science, having been working in the field for 20 years. In cancer treatment applied immunology seeks to activate the patient's own immune system to restore the body's natural defences against the disease. In specific terms, the body constantly produces cells that are potentially "cancerous" but specialised white blood cells known as the NK (or Natural Killer) cells mop them up before they can proliferate. NK cells can become inactive under the influence of many factors, or they may fail to form - either way, applied immunology treatment aims to increase their numbers back to normal levels and activate them. When this is done successfully cancers may shrink and become dormant quite rapidly without recourse to chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Dr. Smarda and his scientific Team have identified dozens of natural "remedies" which are known to activate NK cells, but not all of them work for all patients, so, using sophisticated laboratory testing in Germany, the patient's own NK cells are cultured and each remedy is tested to find the level of activation each will achieve. Normally, 6 or 7 are carefully chosen and then tested, and usually the best two or even three are chosen for treatment.

What strikes one most about Dr Smarda’s approach is that it doesn't involve the usual kind of drugs - indeed, he feels that steroids, antibiotics, etc. are part of the cause of the problem. The importance of normal gut bacteria in maintaining a healthy immune system is widely understood in medicine, yet very few doctors in the UK would prescribe probiotics to restore the normal balance following a course of antibiotics. All treatment at SBL Clinic is based on natural medicines and supplements, not for idealistic reasons but because they are the only products that work to improve immune system function, as shown by meticulous laboratory testing. Many patients will have 200 or more tests performed at the beginning of treatment, giving a complete picture of the body's current status. From these tests an initial plan can be drawn up, followed by further tests to measure progress from which the next stages of the plan can be refined.

Assalix	A proprietary extract of willow bark.	As directed by your physician	This is a phyto-anti-inflammatory drug (PAID), usually provided on prescription. Although essentially created for lower back pain sufferers, it is one of several products, which boosts NK (natural killer) cell activity. To find the NK cell booster most appropriate to each patient, patients NK cells are cultured alongside each of the boosters and the one with the best result is applied.
Bifidon 6N	Each capsule contains: Bifidobacteria 6 billions Ingredients: Lyophilized Bifidobacterium longum BB536, Lactosum, Gelatine. Contains no salt, yeast. Artificial preservatives, wheat, soy, colour or corn. Keep cool between 5 - 8ºC, protect from heat. Ideally store in the fridge.	1 – 3 Capsules per day as directed by your physician or nutraceutric expert.	Very similar to Smarte Dophilus. Candogon	Dried whole egg powder naturally fortified with special immune factors in egg yolk as a dietary supplement. Kalium Citras (Potassium Citrate)	Lactosum, Gelatine, Potassium Citrate, monohydrate	1 - 2 capsules a day.	This is an excellent source of organically bonded potassium. Supersedes the more commonly used potassium chloride as potassium citrate does not burden those with already high amounts of chlorides (e.g. sodium) in their body thus not affecting their membrane hydro-mechanics. It is the only approved cholesterol lowering combination of Omega acids. A study at the University of Tromso, Norway showed that all fish oils apart from Omega 236 increased cholesterol levels. Also it lowers stress and increases permeability of tissues in the body.
